In its painterly composition, the painting references altarpieces and Madonna paintings from Italy and combines the motif with fragments from the Korean throne painting of the Joseon Dynasty. The film is about the last meeting of the 100-year-old Korean grandmother and mother of the artist. Talchum is a musical dance theater from the Joseon Dynasty (1392 - 1910) of Korea that criticized the political grievances of the time. Surya Gied's masked figure plays a similar role; she functions as a witness to her own family conflicts as well as those of society as a whole.The figure also makes an appearance in Olevano Romano, Italy, where during her artist residency at Casa Baldi in 2023, the artist engages with the 19th-century landscape paintings created there, which were painted exclusively by male artists. In 200 Years, Surya Gied has her masked figure seek out the motifs of the old paintings in the present landscape and restages them as photographs. Together with a cohort of fellow immigrant workers from India, South Korea, the Philippines, and other Asian nations, they supported the FRG’s healthcare system through a deep crisis between the mid-1950s and mid-1970s. Like numerous migration stories of so-called contract workers in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) after the Second World War, the ‘guest worker’ status came with a set of discriminatory gestures that often reduced those who received it to mere migrants seeking a better life, even though their presence was crucial to the FRG’s economy and society. Gied grew up with stories of the migrant conditions of the lives of her mother and her peers, as well as with those told at her grandmother’s house in Hwaho-Ri, Jeongub, a village in rural South Korea. Her artistic practice expresses and translates these historical and contemporary narratives of her community with visual aesthetics inspired by the design of godori cards, as seen in the multidisciplinary series Godori – Go Stop Ghost (2022–24), which she had played at her grandmother’s house. The act of playing godori became a way of trespassing the migrant condition of her mother by maintaining a sentimental practice that was part of a greater family structure she left behind in her departure from South Korea. The history of Hwatu cards in Korea is closely linked to the period of Japanese colonial rule (1910-1945) and reflects the complex dynamics of colonialism. Derived from the Japanese Hanafuda cards, the Hwatu cards can be interpreted as a symbol of cultural resilience as Koreans sought to preserve their identity amid colonial pressure to assimilate into Japanese culture. The Hwatu cards feature graphic and symbolic illustrations rooted in nature and the seasons.&nbsp; Each motif has a specific cultural and symbolic meaning and often reflects the cyclical and agricultural aspects of Korean life. The card game was accepted and appropriated despite its association with the painful colonial period and became a very popular card game for all generations. &nbsp;The cards illustrations are abstracted and re-interpreted&nbsp; with a transformed visual language. Each work takes as its starting point a journalistic photograph found on the Internet, which is then abstracted and fractured to reflect and deal with the intense emotions surrounding these images and the concomitant stories of people fleeing war, persecution, torture, rape and hopelessness. No attempt is made to create a literal representation or a similar narrative; rather, fragmentation and abstraction function as a means to a more universal comprehension of these deep and fundamental emotions, while a counter-intuitive palette expresses the naive yet arguably beautiful dreams undeniably at play in the midst of this ongoing tragedy. By leaving behind the comfort zone of surface appearances and delving deeper, most of her works now engage with the singular—the individual—particularly in relation to the themes of fragmentation and the dynamics of seeing and being seen. Whereas her earlier series addressed the anonymous masses who reached Europe across the Mediterranean, her more recent works revisit the same discourse of migration as it unfolded thirty or forty years earlier, often through the perspective of her mother. The playing fields that emerge from the various colour surfaces form their own topography that is added to the picture afterwards, temporarily transforming the canvas of the painting into a game board for the duration of the evening and the exhibition into an evening of board games.Surya Gied explores, in the form of painting, installation and drawing, the feeling of fragmentation and the associated abstraction of one's own identity. In many of her exhibitions, she extracts and duplicates individual elements from her works, which she places in current connections with the respective temporal-spatial environment in a performative and installative manner.For Constanza Mendoza, board games are cognitive interfaces to an environment that, on the one hand, shapes the subjective characteristics of the player, but on the other hand also addresses a subjectivity that allows us to learn various personal skills in order to participate in the (game) world. Her work is directed as a critical challenge at existing bodies of knowledge.A Spatial Turn is part of the current Kreuzberg Pavillon project A SPATIAL TURN, a series of playable situations in which the practices of artists and game makers meet in experimental exhibition formats.
