Surya Suran Gied’s artistic practice focuses on the fragmentation of human identity in the context of migration. At the core of her work is the experience of how biographies are fractured and reshaped through cultural transitions, language shifts, and life between different cultures. She explores these themes through spatial installations that combine painting, photography, sculpture, performance, video, and sound. Her own German-Korean migration background plays a central role, serving as an example of the complex and divergent nature of identity. Gied pursues an expanded notion of painting that reflects the intersections of painting, space, and different medias. Her work also investigates site-specific social and political structures and engages with transmedial processes. Feminist perspectives and a critical examination of patriarchal structures are key elements of her practice.
